What is “Circle of the Earth” in Isaiah 40:22?

By Maria Merola

Since the beginning of the creation, the ancient Hebrews have understood that the shape of the earth is spherical, based on the record of Scripture. However, in recent years, (due a growing mistrust in our corrupt government), many have begun to question the shape of the earth, as if only NASA can help us with this. Long before the existence of NASA, (and cameras taken into space), pure observation of how the world around us functions, has been a reliable way of understanding the shape of the earth.

The official Hebrew word for “earth” is כדור הארץ (ka-dur ha-a-retz), which literally means “The earth ball.” There are billions of photos of the globe earth, many of which are taken by amateur weather balloons, and rockets---- not by NASA. And yet, we have not seen even one authentic photograph of the so called “Flat Earth!”

In recent years, the Flat Earth narrative has crept into the Hebraic Community of believers, as well as into traditional Christianity. What I have noticed, is that those who adhere to this understanding, are not doing a thorough investigation into the meaning of Hebrew words, nor are they looking at all the other passages where these same words appear.

Instead, what they are doing, is “cherry-picking,” verses out of context, with little to no understanding of the etymology of words chosen by the translators. One such example, is with the word “circle” in Isaiah 40:22, which is “chuwg.”

The Hebrew Lexicon definition clearly defines this word as “A SPHERE!”

#H2329 chuwg khoog from 2328; a circle:--circle, circuit, compass, SPHERE.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 40:22 It is he that sits upon the CIRCLE [CHUWG, SPHERE] OF THE EARTH, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in.

The root word tells us even more:

#H2328: chagag khaw-gag to move in a circle, to march in a sacred procession, to observe a festival; to dance, to reel to and fro, to gyrate

The root word for “circle” therefore is describing ROTATION, GYRATION!

In Leviticus 23, we are commanded to observe SEVEN FEASTS annually, and this annual cycle is called a “tequwphah!”

Consequently, this Hebrew word “tequwphah” literally means “REVOLUTION AROUND THE SUN!”

Therefore, the Hebrew translation for the English “circle” is not describing a flat disc, nor a two-dimensional circle that we draw on paper.

By looking at the root word for “chuwg” (circle), its obviously describing an action, not merely a shape!

The root word comes from “chag,” which means a feast or a festival.

Another root word “chagra” means “to revolve.”

And finally, another related root word is “chagag,” which means “To move in a circle, to march in a sacred procession, to observe a festival, to celebrate, to dance, to reel to an fro.”

This means that within a full revolution of the earth, around the sun, (one year), we celebrate SEVEN FEASTS!

What is even more telling, is that the Hebrew word for “sits” in Isaiah 40:22 is “yashab,” which means “to marry, to dwell with!”

Therefore, we can understand biblical cosmology, only when we view it from the lens of wedding language!

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 40:22 It is he that sits [marries] upon the circle [sphere, gyron] of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in [to marry in].

Inside this Hebrew word “Tequwphah,” we see the Paleo Pictograph Letter “QUWPH,” which means “SUN ON THE HORIZON!”

This is proof that the Ancient Hebrews did not believe in a Flat Earth. The “quwph” is a picture of a BALL EARTH sitting on the horizon.

This means that only HALF of the sun is visible at sunrise and sunset.

On a Flat Earth Model, this would be impossible, since the sun is supposedly “OVERHEAD” at all times, and it never sits on the horizon.

See this YouTube Video below: No Sunset on a Flat Earth

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 45:18 For thus says YHWH that created the heavens; Elohiym himself that FORMED [YATZAR] THE EARTH and made it; he has established it, he created it not in vain, he FORMED [YATZAR] it to be inhabited: I am YHWH; and there is none else.

The Hebrew word for “FORMED” in Isaiah 45:18 is as follows:

#H3335 YATZAR [yaw-tsar] THROUGH THE IDEA OF SQUEEZING INTO SHAPE OR FORM; ESPECIALLY AS A POTTER MOULDS CLAY ON THE WHEEL; TO MOULD INTO A FORM; figuratively, to determine (i.e. form a resolution):--earthen, FASHION, FORM, frame, make(-r), potter, purpose.

Tehilliym (Psalm) 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had FORMED [CHIYL] THE EARTH AND THE WORLD [TEBEL, GLOBE], even from everlasting to everlasting, you are Elohiym.

The Hebrew word for “FORMED” in Psalm 90:2 is as follows:

#H2342 CHUWL khool or chiyl kheel; a primitive root; properly, TO TWIST OR WHIRL, IN A CIRCULAR OR SPIRAL MANNER.

This is describing exactly what a potter does with a ball of clay on the potter’s wheel!

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 64:8 But now, O YHWH, you are our Father; and we are the clay, and you our POTTER [YATZAR]; and we are all the work of your hand.

Following the destruction of Jerusalem after the Roman Siege in 70 A.D., the Yahuwdiym (Jewish) people were scattered to the nations, and thus, the Hebrew language influenced the languages of the heathen nations.

An example of this, is with the High German word “kugel,” which literally came from the Hebrew word “chuwg!”

Looking at the definition for the German word “kugel,” we discover that it means the following: German-English-Dictionary-Kugel

As you will see from the graphics I have provided below, the Hebrew word “chuwg,” has evolved into the German word “kugel,” which literally means: A ball, a sphere, an orb, a globe.

This word even describes “a round pastry puff filled with cream.”

Another proof that we have, for the Hebrew word
“chuwg” is in the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

Isaiah 40:22 -- γῦρον (Gyron), Septuagint (LXX). Some militant atheists have made themselves irrelevant over the years by entertaining bad arguments that come back to bite them in the butt.

The Greek word “gyron” used in Isaiah 40:22 is one of those words which militant atheists, such as Richard Carrier claim mean a two-dimensional flat earth.

Let us examine the Septuagint rendering of Isaiah 40:22.

Greek: ὁ κατέχων τὸν γῦρον τῆς γῆς, καὶ οἱ ἐνοικοῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ὡς ἀκρίδες, ὁ στήσας ὡς καμάραν τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ διατείνας ὡς σκηνὴν κατοικεῖν.

Word: γῦρον (gyron) Christos Terzis, a Greek scholar from Greece, was able to break down the meaning of gyron.

He said: Gyros, Γύρος, means round not circle. And it can well mean the shape of a sphere, not necessarily a circle.”

He went further on to say: Concerning Gyros...it is actually the same word used to say circumnavigate the earth.

It can mean to go around in circles too. For instance, the Hebrews went GYRO of Jericho seven times and then it fell. Ironically from the Greek words Gyron/Gyros, Gyro and Gyre, we get the word gyroscope, which is an instrument used for proving the earth is spherical.

In the account where YaHuWaH commanded Yisrael to march around Jericho seven times, the Hebrew word is cabab, from where we get the word “shish-cababor “shish-kebab.This word describes meat that rotates on a rotisserie while it cooks.

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua)
6:3 And you shall compass the city, all you men of war, and go round about the city once. Thus shall you do six days.

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua) 6:4 And seven priests shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the seventh day you shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the trumpets.

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua) 6:11 So the ark of YHWH compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua) 6:14 And the second day they compassed the city once, and returned into the camp: so they did six days.

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua) 6:15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city after the same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven times.

When I asked YaHuWaH about the shape of the earth, he reminded me that in Jewish Weddings, the bride circles,or compasses, around the bridegroom seven times.

Up until this point, I had always thought this was just a tradition of Judaism. However, when I sought Yah for the answers, he explained to me that the custom of the bride compassing the bridegroom began with Jericho!

Yahuwshuwa (Joshua) 1:3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

YaHuWaH showed me that it was from this event that the ancient Hebrew wedding custom first began. Then I finally understood, that this custom was to remind us of the first marriage covenant that Yah made with his beloved bride on Mount Sinai. And to go along with this covenant, she was given the Promised Land.

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of Dawiyd (David). The heavens [shamayim] declare the glory of Elohiym; and the firmament [raqiya, expanse of heaven] shows his handywork.

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:2 Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night shows knowledge.

*Explanation: From the above verses, we understand that the heavens (plural, the three heavens) speak to humanity. We are shown by the constellations (mazzaroth), the glory of YaHuWaH by fully understanding the heavenly or celestial bodies, and how they paint a prophetic picture of the bridegroom and his bride.

With each new day (yom), the day (powered by the sun) speaks to us. And with each night (as we dream), secret or hidden knowledge is given to us (Job 3315-16).

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world [tebel, globe]. In them has he set a tabernacle [tent, sukkah] for the sun,

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber [chuppah], and rejoics as a strong man to run a race.

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Tehilliym (Psalms) 19:7 The Torah (law) of YHWH is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of YHWH is sure, making wise the simple.

Then, it occurred to me, that just as Yisra’el was commanded to circle,” or compass,Jericho seven times, there is an ancient Hebrew wedding custom, whereby the bride circles around,or compasses, her bridegroom seven times!

We see Messiah (the bridegroom) pictured as “The Sun of Righteousness” in Malachi 4:2.

In John 8:19 & 9:5, Yahuwshuwa refers to himself as “The Light of the World.”

In Revelation 22:16, our Messiah calls himself “The bright and morning star!”

This is the reason why the devil has tried to trick humans into worshiping the sun itself, rather than the one who created the sun.

In Matthew 24:8 & Mark 13:8, our Messiah likens the earth in the end of days to a pregnant woman, who will eventually go through birth pains.”

In the King James Version, it uses the word sorrows, but the Greek Textus Receptus uses the word odin, which literally means going into labour, childbirth, birth pains.

In Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 66:7-10, Jerusalem is described as a woman who will go through birth pains in the end of days, and thus, she will deliver a man-child.

This is none other than the “one new mandescribed in Ephesians 2:15 & Revelation 12:5. In Zechariah 2:8, Yah likens Jerusalem (Zion) to “The apple of his eye, which in Hebrew means “The pupil of the eye.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 66:7 Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

*Explanation: The Hebrew word for travailed,in the above passage is the very same word that is used in Psalm 90:2 for formed!

It is the word chuwl, which is #2342, as I have previously cited:

#H2342 CHUWL [khool] or chiyl {kheel}; a primitive root; properly, TO TWIST OR WHIRL, IN A CIRCULAR OR SPIRAL MANNER, TO DANCE!

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 66:8 Who has heard such a thing? who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Tziyown (Zion) travailed, she brought forth her children.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 66:9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? says YHWH: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? says your Elohiym.

Yeshayahuw (Isaiah) 66:10 Rejoice you with Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and be glad with her, all you that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all you that mourn for her:

What we see from these beautiful examples given to us in Scripture, is that the bride (who is like the earth) circles around the bridegroom, (who is like the sun). Even the name Jerichocomes from a root word that means “lunation, month.”

Every 28-30 days, a woman ovulates and she is given another chance to become pregnant. The bride (Yisra’el) marching around Jericho seven times, is a prophetic picture of how she dances, and encircles around the bridegroom seven times in a year for seven feasts or festivals. Moon Orbits the Earth

The moon is tethered to the earth, because of the earths gravitational pull. Does the Moon spin on its axis? Yes! The time it takes for the Moon to rotate once on its axis, is equal to the time it takes for the Moon to orbit once around Earth. This means that the same side of the Moon always faces our planet.

Everything in YaHuWaH's creation naturally takes on the shape of a sphere, by virtue of gravity, and centrifugal force. There is absolutely nothing in YaHuWaH's creation that is in the shape of a flat disc.

As a matter of fact, a flat disc can only exist on a piece of paper (theoretically speaking). In reality, everything that YaHuWaH has created, takes on the shape of a sphere, or has mass.

All the planets in our Solar System have taken on the shape of a sphere, because of the gravitational pull from the sun.

The sun causes all the planets to spin like a top, and because of friction from the elements in space, the planets are like rocks in a rock tumbler, as they begin to smooth out and become rounded when they spin.

Our Messiah is a prophetic picture of the Sun of Righteousness (Malachi 4:2), and he is the Light of the World (John 8:12 & 9:5).

He is the one who has formed the earth and other planets like a potter does with clay on the wheel. A potter forming clay on the wheel, naturally sees the clay turn into a sphere, unless he forces it to take on a different shape using tools and instruments.

When blowing glass, it automatically takes on the shape of a sphere, unless the glass-blower beats it with an instrument forcing it to take on another shape.

When a child blows bubbles with soapy water, they naturally take on the shape of spheres, not discs!

When tumbling rocks in a rock tumbler, the rocks naturally begin to take on a rounded shape as they tumble.

Other things in creation that are naturally in the shape of sphere:

Water Bubbles. Air Bubbles. Atom Molecules. Many Fruits & Vegetables. All Celestial Bodies. Planets. Moons. The Sun. Glass being blown. Water droplets.
